acquires Moli Energy from NEC Group for Taiwanese Notebook
Cell Domestic Supply.
Lithium-ion cell maker E-One Energy Group signs a Share Purchase Agreement with NEC Group in Tokyo, Japan on Jan. 12th 2000. The focal point of this signing was to transfer ownership of NEC’s Canadian lithium cell factory, Moli Energy, to E-One. E-One Chairman-Leslie Koo (辜成允) and NEC Senior GM- Mr. Matsue hosted the ceremony.
Founded in 1977 and located in suburb Vancouver, Canada, Moli Energy was the first manufacturer began mass produce lithium cell (back in 1994); with highly qualified R&D task force, Moli has many key patents that leverages the performance and quality of the cells. Before joining Japanese NEC Group in 1990, Moli has already listed in 33 different countries. The factory is composed of 4 cylinder lithium cell production lines and 300+ employees, with monthly productivity of 1.8milliom units. The main sale came from notebook use cylinder lithium cells 18650 with 1.65 mAH ( a new generation of high capacity cells will be able to achieve 1.8 mAH).
Companies such as Koo’s Group, YiFu Financial Consulting Group, DonYuang Cell, ChingYi Textile Ltd. and Taiwan Paper Ltd. are all stakeholders of E-One Moli. Since the company’s founding in March 1998, E-One Moli Energy Corp. determines to play a central roll in provide power solutions to mobile phone, notebook computer and portable electronic devices. In order to fulfill the “Time to Market” need of these industries, E-One teamed up with Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology in 1998 to establish a trail-run facility. In 2000, after eight month of negotiation, E-One Energy has finally made the acquisition with Moli Energy to become E-One Moli Energy Group as we know today.
In 1999, E-One Moli started the first stage of developing 5700m2 of the 2-acre property is to construct the warehouse and the first production lines. After the productivity tested okay, then will start to setup second and third stage production lines that focuses on 6MM batteries. The expected annual output account for all the batteries produced will be 4 millions /per month.
70% of the 1.2 milliom monthly output goes to domestic notebook computer makers; that give E-One Moli Energy a 10% market share in Taiwan. The strategic acquisition will only benefit E-One Energy by offering the company more technical capability, higher brand recognition, economy of scale, existing business opportunities and comprehensive logistical channels.
